The Bertie County Emergency Manage ment Department is currently monitoring the track and strength of Hurricane Florence, churning in the Atlantic Ocean. According to the Na tional Weather Service Weather Forecast Office in Wakefield Va’s report from 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, Hurricane Flor ence has the possibility to strengthen over the next day. As of press time. Hur ricane Florence is clas sified as a category four storm with maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour, in creasing the risk of life- threatening impacts, including storm surge and inland flooding. There is an increas ing confidence in wide spread rainfall totals of six-to-12 inches, with potential for more. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has urged all North Carolina resi dents, businesses and visitors to prepare for the storm. The latest forecast from the National Hurri cane Center shows Flor ence becoming a major hurricane and tracking toward the southeast ern United States by the end of the week. “Everyone in North Carolina needs to keep See STATE, A5 NCHP seeks help in two hit-and run cold cases BYTHADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance Despite four years passing, the N.C. Highway Patrol is still working on two cases in volving hit-and-run deaths. NCHP 1st Sgt. Rodney W. Sawyer said the organization is still searching for answers in the hit-and-run deaths of Victoria Little of Williamston and Sherman Wayne Morn ing of Colerain. On Aug. 10,2014, Little was struck by a vehicle while ly ing in the roadway of U.S. 13 between Windsor and Wil liamston. “The vehicle which struck Ms. Little failed to stop at the scene,” Sgt. Sawyer said. “Investigators were unable to locate any evidence indi cating the type, make, model or color of the vehicle in volved.” The original investiga tion revealed a call came in at approximately 3 a.m. on Aug. 10 about a woman lying in the road. Before officers could respond. Little had been struck, and no vehicle was found at the scene. Sgt. Sawyer said the NCHP continues to investigate the case, and is asking anyone with information to come forward. The investigators are also continuing efforts for anoth er fatality in Bertie County. Sherman Wayne Morning of Colerain was killed in a hit-and-run collision on N.C. 42 on June 23, 2015. Morning was found lying in the roadway sometime after 1:30 a.m., and was also struck by an unidentified ve hicle. Those with information about either incident can call 252-332-6800.
